In this talk, Nicolei will share insights into her interdisciplinary art practice, research tools, and methodology, with a focus on her engagement with the PKL archives. As a preview to her forthcoming exhibition at PKL in February 2027, she will share the conceptual framework of her ongoing project. Employing hand-drawn tracings of archival materials from the PKL Center’s collections, her project proposes that the act of tracing can serve as a means to imagine histories that challenge traditional narratives.
About the Speaker:
Born in Los Angeles, California, Nicolei Buendia Gupit is a Filipina-American multidisciplinary artist whose visual art practice investigates the impacts of colonial histories, global capitalism, and the climate crisis across the Philippines and its diaspora. Through her body of work, she addresses how these forces contribute to environmental degradation, intensify water scarcity, and drive migration.
Engaging with sculpture, drawing, video, and installation, her practice seeks to uncover erased histories and imagine collective forms of belonging. Her works have been presented in solo exhibitions in the United States, Italy, Taiwan, and the Philippines. She holds a BA in Studio Art from Williams College (2013) and an MFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University (2022).
