Donna Miranda identifies her practice as a choreographer. Her practice considers bodies in time and space from the individual body towards collective political actions, a social movement. For Leaps, Changes, Conditions, Miranda’s “Scores for National Democracy” figures bodies in motion through the enactment of theory by practice. In its motion, it reveals the dialectical bodies of the present nation-state, the Government of the Republic of the Philippines, its limits and boundaries through negotiations with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines and its violence against the peasantry, and the National Democratic movement with its collective struggle and horizon through its assertion of what is possible.
For the mapping workshop, Donna Miranda and the participants will map peasant killings throughout the country, with data collected by Tanggol Magsasaka (Defend the Farmers). The scope of the mapping workshop is from 2022 onwards with the current regime of Ferdinand Marcos Jr.. The workshop will consist of cross-checking accounts of peasant killings with media accounts, in the effort to document the name of the victim, and the place and time. This produced data will be affixed to the map of land-holdings in the Philippines produced by the IBON Foundation. The previous iteration “Scores for National Democracy” and its mapping in 2019 concerned the previous regime of Rodrigo Duterte.
This event is part of the public program of Leaps, Changes, Conditions, a project by Yuji de Torres, supported by the KLFI Research Grant.
