Call for Entries: Ateneo Art Awards 2025 Purita Kalaw Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism

The 12th year of the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism welcomes entries on the theme of Flight.

Flight is often associated with the physical act of being airborne. With such denotation, flight can connote ambition, freedom, escape, or transcendence.

Flight can also refer to a flight of stairs, similarly suggesting ascent. One of the works from the collection of the Kalaw-Ledesma Foundation, Inc. is the 1948 painting of National Artist Cesar Legaspi (1917-1994) titled “Stairway to Heaven,” which depicts the subject. Another part of the collection is Purita Kalaw-Ledesma’s archive—her scrapbooks, in which she diligently cut-and-pasted newspaper articles, photographs, invitations, and other ephemera related to the art world. The first scrapbook (dated 1948 to 1949) includes a clipping of a critique by writer, poet, lawyer, and educator Aurelio S. Alvero (also known by his pen name Magtanggul Asa), who described the painting as such: “It was masterful the way Legaspi wedded both the etherealness of dreaming and desiring and the maddeningness which necessarily accompanies desire unattained.” Indeed, a journey upward is rarely without challenges; progress is not always guaranteed, so it often demands effort and perseverance.

Now in our fifth year of offering a theme rather than a list of exhibits to visit, the annual Ateneo Art Awards – Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism has always aimed to capture the spirit of the times. The themes over the years reflect this evolving journey: from 2021’s Navigating Crisis: Arts and our Futures during the pandemic, to 2022’s Fresh Winds and New Light: Forecasting Change which imagined a better world, followed by 2023’s Risk exploring the tension between peril and the potential for change, and 2024’s Fluctuation capturing both possibility and unpredictability.

In essence, this year’s theme, Flight is a symbol of transit. Where are we headed next? Where is the art world headed next? And where is art criticism headed next?

The Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism will have English and Filipino categories. A panel of jurors will shortlist a maximum of six (6) writers from each category. From these lists, winners will be selected by the editors of our partner publications and will be announced during the awarding ceremony scheduled in September 2025.

Two winners will be selected from the English category. The winner of the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for The Philippine Star will be awarded a regular column under ‘Platforms’ in the Arts and Culture section of the paper, to be published once a month with a total of 12 articles for a year. The winner of the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for ArtAsiaPacific will be contributing to the bi-monthly publication, with a total of six (6) articles for a year.

One winner selected from the Filipino category will be awarded the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for Katipunan Journal and will be contributing a total of two (2) articles to the bi-annual research publication.

In addition, two residency partners—Orange Project Naranja Writer’s Residency and The White House Writer’s Residency—will be offering selected winning writers month-long residencies in Bacolod, Negros Occidental and San Antonio, Zambales, respectively, providing an opportunity to immerse with the local art communities in the region.

The Ateneo Art Awards – Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism was instituted by the Ateneo Art Gallery and Kalaw-Ledesma Foundation, Inc., in partnership with The Philippine Star, as part of the 2014 Ateneo Art Awards. It was named in honor of Purita Kalaw-Ledesma, art patron and founder of the Art Association of the Philippines, who believed in art criticism’s “vital role in the development of culture,” citing its capacity to “guide artists towards new directions and public taste towards the best in past and current artistic output.”

QUALIFICATIONS OF PARTICIPANTS

  1. Employees, whether full-time or contractual, of the Ateneo Art Gallery, Ateneo de Manila University, or Kalaw Ledesma-Foundation, Inc., are not allowed to participate.
  2. Must be based in the Philippines.
  3. To avoid conflicts of interest, participants must not have a regular column and must not hold an editorial post in any broadsheet or local/international magazine. Regular columnists are not allowed to join but contributors, defined as any person whose written work is published with a byline but not identified as a columnist, may join.
  4. Bloggers defined as writers of online journals, websites, or whose written work is published in electronic social media may join.
  5. Past winners of the PKL Prize are not eligible to participate.
  6. Writers who have been shortlisted in the past for the PKL Prize may still submit an entry.

MECHANICS FOR ENTRIES

  1. Entries should be essays with no more than 1,000 words.
  2. Entries must reflect the theme of the Program.
  3. The entry must be written on A4-sized paper. The font should be Arial, Times New Roman, or Book Antiqua, font size 12.
  4. Entries must be submitted digitally as both Word and PDF file attachments with no indication of the identity of the writer on the documents.
  5. Only one original entry is allowed per participant.
    1. The essay should not have been published before on any printed or online platform.
    2. Any entry that has been submitted for consideration in any other writing contest before 30 September 2025 will be disqualified.
  6. Entries must be collated in an accessible Google Drive, along with a copy of your updated CV/resume, and submitted at https://go.ateneo.net/PKL2025Entry with the following file formats with the writer’s last name and title of the entry (ex. Dela Cruz – Essay Title) as filename:
    1. Entry in Word document format (ex. Dela Cruz – Essay Title.docx)
    2. Entry in PDF format (ex. Dela Cruz – Essay Title.pdf)
    3. CV/Resume in PDF or Word format (ex. Dela Cruz – CV/Resume)
  7. The deadline for submission of entries will be on 30 June 2025 (Monday), 11:59 PM.
  8. Copyright of entries of the shortlisted and winning writers shall be held by the writer jointly with AAG and KLFI. All shortlisted and winning essays will be published online on the Vital Points microsite after the announcement of the shortlist in August 2025.

Ang Ikalabindalwang taon ng Premyong Purita Kalaw-Ledesma para sa Kritisismong Pansining ay inaanyayahan ang mga lahok na may temang Paglipad.

Ang Paglipad ay karaniwang iniuugnay sa pisikal na paglutang sa himpapawid. Sa diwa, ang paglipad ay maaaring mangahulugan ng ambisyon, kalayaan, pag-alpas, o ang paglampas sa karaniwan.

Ang Paglipad ay maaari ring tumukoy sa walang patid na paghakbang sa hagdan, na siyang nagmumungkahi ng pag-akyat. Ang isa sa mga akda na nagmula sa koleksyon ng Kalaw-Ledesma Foundation, Inc, ay Ipininta noong 1948 ng Pambansang Alagad ng Sining na si Cesar Legaspi (1917-1994) na pinamagatang “Stairway to Heaven,” na naglalarawan sa paksa. Ang isa pang bahagi ng koleksiyon ay ang archive ni Purita Kalaw-Ledesma—ang kaniyang mga Scrapbook, sa sigasig nitong pagsama-samahin ang mga ginupit na mga artikulo sa mga pahayagan, mga litrato, mga imbitasyon, at iba pang mga bagay na pansamantalang ginamit na may kaugnayan sa mundo ng sining. Ang unang Scrapbook (petsado mula 1948 hanggang 1949) kabilang ang kinuhang puna ng manunulat, makata, abogado, at tagapagturo na si Aurelio S. Alvero (kilala sa kaniyang sagisag-panulat, bilang Magtanggul Asa), na inilarawan ang obrang ito, bilang: “Tunay na dalubhasa ang paraan ni Legaspi na pag-isahin ang malimang pangangarap at paghahangad, at ang nakababaliw na likas na pangangailangan na kaakibat ng hindi matamong pagnanasa.” Sa katunayan, ang paglalakbay paitaas ay malabong walang mga pagsubok; ang progreso ay hindi laging garantisado, kaya madalas itong nangangailangan ng pagsisikap at pagtitiyaga.

Ngayon, sa ikalimang taon ng paghahandog ng isang tema na hindi lang basta hanay ng mga exhibit para daluhan, ang taunang Ateneo Art Awards – Premyong Purita Kalaw-Ledesma para sa Kritisismong Pansining ay lagi’t laging nilalayong bihagin ang diwa ng panahon. Ang bawat tema sa mga nagdaang taon ay sumasalamin sa paunlad na paglalakbay na ito. Mula sa Navigating Crisis: Arts and our Futures noong 2021 sa kasagsagan ng pandemiya, tungo sa Fresh Winds and New Light: Forecasting Change, noong 2022 sa pagtingin sa mas maayos na mundo, na sinundan ng Risk noong 2023, na sinusuri ang tensyon sa pagitan ng panganib at ang posibilidad ng pagbabago, at ang Fluctuation noong 2024 na nagpapakita ng parehong posibilidad at kawalang-katiyakan.

Sa diwa, ang tema ngayong taon, ang Paglipad ay simbolo ng paglalakbay. Saan nga tayo patungo? Saan patungo ang mundo ng sining? At saan patungo ang Kritisismong Pansining?

Ang Premyong Purita Kalaw-Ledesma para sa Kritisismong Pansining ay may kategoryang Ingles at Filipino. Isang lupon ng mga hurado ang pipili ng hindi hihigit sa anim (6) na manunulat sa bawat kategorya. Mula sa listahang ito, pipiliin ang magsisipagwagi ng mga patnugot ng mga katuwang na publikasyon. Iaanunsiyo ang magsisipagwagi sa idaraos na seremonya sa Setyembre 2025.

Dalawang magwawagi ang pipiliin mula sa kategoryang Ingles. Gagawaran ang mananalo ng Premyong Purita Kalaw-Ledesma para sa The Philippine Star ng isang regular na kolum sa ilalim ng ‘Platforms’ sa seksiyong Arts and Culture ng pahayagan na buwanang ilalathala, na may kabuuang 12 artikulo sa loob ng isang taon. Samantala, makapaglalathala naman ang mananalo ng Premyong Purita Kalaw-Ledesma para sa ArtAsiaPacific sa nasabing lathalain na inilalabas kada dalawang buwan, na may kabuuang 6 artikulo sa loob ng isang taon.

Ang isang mapipiling magwawagi sa kategorya sa Filipino ay gagawaran naman ng Premyong Kalaw-Ledesma para sa Katipunan Journal at makapaglalathala sa publikasyong pampananaliksik na ito na inilalabas nang dalawang beses kada taon, sa sumang dalawang artikulo sa loob ng isang taon.

Dagdag pa, dalawang katuwang na residency—ang Orange Project Naranja Writer’s Residency at ang The White House Writer’s Residency—isa sa mga magsisipagwagi ang mapipili at maaanyayahan para sa isang buwang writer’s residency sa lungsod ng Bacolod, Negros Occidental at San Antonio, Zambales, makapagbibigay ito ng pagkakataon na makisangkot at lumubog sa lokal na komunidad pansining ng rehiyon.

Inilunsad ang Premyong Purita Kalaw-Ledesma (PKL) para sa Kritisismong Pansining ng Ateneo Art Awards noong 2014 ng Ateneo Art Gallery at Kalaw-Ledesma Foundation, Inc. (KLFI) at sa pakikipag-ugnayan ng The Philippine Star. Ipinangalan ito bilang pagpupugay kay Purita Kalaw-Ledesma, patron ng sining at tagapagtatag ng Art Association of the Philippines (AAP). Naniwala si Purita sa “mahalagang gampanin sa pagpapaunlad ng kultura” ng kritisismong pansining, sampu na rin ng kakayanan nitong “patnubayan ang kapwa mga alagad ng sining tungong mga bagong direksiyon at panlasang pampubliko tungong pinakamahuhusay na nakaraan at pangkasalukuyang likhang-sining.”

MGA KUWALIPIKASYON NG MGA LALAHOK

  1. Ang mga empleyado, full-time man o kontraktuwal, ng Ateneo Art Gallery, Pamantasang Ateneo de Manila, o Kalaw-Ledesma Foundation, Inc., ay hindi maaaring lumahok.
  2. Tanging ang nakabase sa Pilipinas ang maaaring lumahok.
  3. Upang maiwasan ang salungatan ng Interes, ang mga lalahok ay dapat walang regular na kolum at hindi dapat nagtataglay ng anumang posisyong pampatnugutan sa anumang pahayagan o lokal/internasyonal na magasin. Hindi makalalahok ang mga regular na kolumnista subalit ang mga manunulat na nakapag-aambag sa mga ganitong lathalain ngunit hindi tukoy bilang kolumnista ay maaaring lumahok.
  4. Ang mga blogger na tukoy na manunulat ng mga dyornal online, website, o may mga naisulat na akda na nailabas sa social media ay maaaring lumahok.
  5. Ang mga dati nang nanalo sa Premyong PKL ay hindi na maaaring lumahok.
  6. Ang mga manunulat na nakasama sa shortlist sa mga nakaraang Premyong PKL ay maaari pa ring lumahok.

MGA PANUTO SA PAGLAHOK

  1. Ang mga lahok ay dapat sanaysay na hindi lalabis sa 1,000 salita.
  2. Ang mga lahok ay dapat nagninilay hinggil sa tema ng Programa.
  3. Ang lahok ay dapat nakatipa sa papel na A4, sa font na Arial, Times New Roman, o Book Antiqua, sa laking 12.
  4. Ang mga lahok ay dapat ipasa bilang nakalakip na Word at PDF nang walang anumang indikasyon ng identidad ng manunulat sa alinmang dokumento.
  5. Iisang orihinal na sanaysay lamang ang maaaring ipasa ng bawat lalahok.
    1. Ang sanaysay ay hindi pa dapat nailalathala sa anumang platapormang limbag o elektroniko.
    2. Anumang lahok na ipinasa sa iba pang timpalak bago ang ika-30 ng Setyembre 2023 ay madidiskuwalipika.
  6. Dapat kolektahin ang mga lahok, kasama ang iyong CV/Resume, sa isang nabubuksang folder sa Google Drive, na ang link ay ipapasa sa https://go.ateneo.net/PKL2025Entry.
